Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has started working on internet price reduction. For this purpose, an initiative has been taken for ‘Cost Modeling’ with the assistance of International Telecommunication Union (ITU). A special meeting was held at BTRC Office on June 8, 2017, organized by ITU where this information was shared , as one of the BTRC officials informed.
Last April, State Minister of Post and Telecommunication Division Tarana Halim said-New internet price will be fixed within next six months. That’s the reason BTRC has been given an instruction for ‘Cost Modeling’ by the Telecommunication Division.
On August 31, 2015, government, for the last time, fixed the cost of per Mbps (Megabyte Per Second) bandwidth tk 625 by reducing from tk 1,068. The internet cost in Bangladesh is the third lowest throughout the world, as BTRC confirmed.
As per BTRC’s information, the total number of internet subscribers in Bangladesh is 60 million 72 lakh and 45 thousand. Among them, the number of mobile internet users is 60 million 31 lakh 20 thousand, WiMAX 89 thousand and the number of Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is 4 lakh 36 thousand.
