Bangladesh is focusing the women in bringing them to the umbrella of Digital Bangladesh and I think this is a very hopeful feature and component of Digital Bangladesh. So, initiating the program like WIFI is so relevant and so timely move for Bangladesh for women empowerment and their inclusiveness through ICT. Speaker of Bangladesh parliament, Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury made this remark while addressing at the launching ceremony of Bangladesh Women ICT Frontier Initiative(WIFI) at the hotel Pan pacific Sonargaon on July 6, 2017.
Praising the WIFI commencement in Bangladesh, speaker said, we all know about the benefits of connecting women with ICT. It is also mentioned in the SDGs. And we believe, technology driven goals have to include the half of the population. Because there are different benefits and usage of technology to bring positive improvement in the lives of women.
As special guest of this program, Women and Children Affairs Minister Meher Afroz Chumki said, implementation of Digital Bangladesh is equally important for both - male and women. This program will help to bring the women from the root level to the mainstream ICT sector and will play a pivotal role to empower them.
As chair of the launching event, Minister of State for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak said, we are giving capacity development training to more than hundred thousand young women and men under different projects like Leveraging ICT for Growth Employment and Governance, Support to Kaliakair Hi-Tech Parks, Learning and Earning Development, etc. In all of these capacity development programs, we have ensured at least 30% women participation. Recently, we have adopted a new project titled ‘She Power’ exclusively for development of 10,500 women entrepreneurs for our ICT Industry.
Director UNAPCICT (United Nations Asian and Pacific Training Centre for ICT for Development) Dr. Hyeun-Suk Rhee stated that she would advocate for the development of Bangladeshi ICT sector to the United Nations.
USA ambassador to Bangladeh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat, Australian high commissioner to Bangladesh, Julia Niblett, ICT secretary(acting) Subir Kishore Choudhury, DoICT(Department of ICT) Director General Banamali Bhowmick, Additional secretary of ICT Division Susanta Kumar Saha also addressed in this event.
