The mobile phone operators Robi and Airtel have been finally merged officially. Chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Mr. Shahjahan Mahmud handed over the ‘Merger Certificate’ to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Robi Axiata Mr. Mahtab Uddin Ahmed in a program held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) on July 29, 2017. State Minister of Post and Telecommunication Division Tarana Halim was also present in the program.
Tarana Halim said-We all experienced country’s largest merger taken place in the telecommunication sector. The merged company Robi will hopefully play a significant role in execution of ‘Digital Bangladesh’ project through more investments. As a result of this merger, a suitable competitive environment has been created.
This suitable competitive environment created due to this merger, will ensure standard telecommunication services in the country, as stated BTRC Chairman Shahjahan Mahmud.
Mahtab Uddin Ahmed said-Robi’s next goal is to convert into a digital company of next generation. After being merged with Airtel successfully, we have become committed more to reach the goal.
Among others, Additional Secretary of Post and Telecommunication Division Mr. Saiful Islam, BTRC Vice Chairman Ahsan Habib and other superior officials of BTRC were also present in the program.
