Fitbit Update Means More Accurate Exercise Tracking

Publish On : 23/11/2015

Fitbit sees you when you're sleeping, it knows when you're awake, and now it knows if you've been exercising, so stick to your workout plan for goodness sake.

A new Fitbit update means your wearable will automatically track common exercises like biking, hiking, running, and sports. Introduced today for the Fitbit Charge HR fitness tracker and Fitbit Surge GPS watch (pictured), SmartTrack exercise recognition records select workouts to the mobile app, giving users credit for every active moment.

"At Fitbit we're always working on innovative features that are easy to use and make tracking health and fitness a fun, motivational experience," Tim Roberts, vice president of interactive, said in a statement.

SmartTrack can identify if you're on the elliptical, biking, running, walking, getting in an aerobic workout (Zumba, cardio-kickboxing, dance classes), and taking in a game of tennis, basketball, or soccer.

Strap on the Charge HR or Surge before a workout, and the device will automatically record to your smartphone a summary, including duration, calories burned, and heart rate stats. Plus, personalized settings allow the user to choose which types of activities will be tracked. By default, the trackers will start recording after 15 minutes of activity, but you can set it to start recording earlier if you prefer.

"Our users find exercise in all parts of their day, including activities like short walks with the dog or a bike commute to work," Roberts said. "These new features allow them to focus on their exercise, giving them credit for their most active moments and letting the technology do the work to automatically track progress toward their fitness goals."

Fitbit also boosted its PurePulse heart rate technology, which now provides users with better tracking during and after high-intensity workouts. The update is activated when using Exercise Mode on the Charge HR or multi-sport modes with the Surge.
