A special seminar on ‘Application of modern technology to reduce carbon emissions’ was held at the Science Museum in Agargaon the capital. In the seminar, special emphasis was placed on the use of renewable technologies to criminalize environmental pollution activities such as carbon emissions.
The National Science and Technology Museum Authority organized this seminar on Monday on the occasion of the visit of 70 Deputy Assistant Directors and Court Inspectors of the Anti-Corruption Commission. ACC Court Inspector Zahidul Islam presented the main article in the seminar.
The then ACC chief and currently Director General of National Museum of Science and Technology Mohammad Munir Chowdhury described the experience of conducting ACC enforcement operations in 2018 and 2019.
He said, “At that time the ACC’s legal powers were used to stop environmental crimes and take strict action against those involved in illegal proceeds from environmental crimes. Even illegal stone quarries were detected and stone quarrying was stopped from Panchagarh district. Those who are unethically deriving income or profit from environmental pollution is definitely an offense punishable under corruption.”
He further said, “Environmental pollution is practically a crime for ‘unbridled carbon emission’, which requires the application of cutting-edge technology.” Proper enforcement of environmental laws is a huge challenge. The rate at which carbon is emitted from illegal brick kilns steel mills and rerolling mills is wreaking havoc on the environment. In this case, artificial intelligence-based sensors should be used to detect the source of environmental pollution, determine the air quality, and take punitive measures against those who are responsible. Monitoring and pollution control are very difficult with the limited manpower of thousands of factories or brick kilns. In this case, robots or drones must be used to detect and control these crimes. ACC can work as a collaborative force with the Department of Environment in this process.”
Among others, Court Inspector Shafiqul Islam and Assistant Director of Environment Department Redwan Ullah spoke at the seminar.
In the program, the trainees were given mementos by the Science Museum.
