A new report by Telenor Asia highlights a significant surge in Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption in Bangladesh, with a staggering 9 out of 10 mobile internet users now utilizing AI tools on their devices. The findings, released today in Dhaka, position Bangladesh as a nation eager to embrace new technologies like mobile technology and artificial intelligence.
The report, titled 'Digital Lives Decoded (Bangladesh)', unveiled at a city hotel today. It provides insights into how mobile technology, enhanced by AI, is transforming various sectors and daily lives across the country.
Md. Abu Bakar Siddique, Vice Chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), commented at the event, "Mobile connectivity is a prerequisite for making Bangladesh digitally skilled and achieving economic progress. Alongside providing connectivity to people, ensuring they use mobile technology safely and responsibly should be our collective priority."
Manisha Dogra, Senior Vice President and Head of External Relations and Sustainability at Telenor Asia, emphasized the transformative potential of mobile technology, further enriched by AI, in revolutionizing sectors like education and health in Bangladesh. She stated, "Telenor Asia, together with Grameenphone, is proud to have helped lay a strong foundation for mobile connectivity in Bangladesh. We are delighted that mobile technology has fostered a better quality of digital life across the country, as reflected in the opinions of the survey participants."
The report underscores three key areas
Firstly, Bangladesh is moving towards smarter living by adopting services such as online education, mobile wallets, and mobility tracking. Six out of ten respondents highlighted the benefits of online education, a rate higher than in Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Educational materials like online courses and learning apps are popular with one in two users (53%).
Secondly, the increasing threat of identity theft and deepfakes has made online safety imperative. As the digital landscape in Bangladesh evolves, so do the risks, with concerns rising around identity fraud and deepfakes. Seven out of ten users expressed worry about the security of their online accounts. Bangladesh is also identified as being at high risk of network attacks.
Thirdly, the use of Artificial Intelligence is steadily increasing in Bangladesh. Six out of ten mobile internet users expressed enthusiasm for the potential and effectiveness of AI in their daily lives. Particularly, eight out of ten held a positive view regarding the impact of AI on educational activities.
The easy availability and user-friendliness of various free AI tools are contributing to their growing popularity in the workplace in Bangladesh. However, the report also highlights a notable gender disparity in the use of these tools. While only one-third of women (37%) use AI in the workplace, the rate is nearly half (47%) among male mobile internet users.
