The Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service for switching operator without changing mobile phone number will be formally inaugurated on Sunday (October 21).
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Council (BTRC) said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will officially inaugurate the service from Ganabhaban on that day.
Meanwhile, Post, Telecommunication and ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar said the cost for the service will be reduced due to demands from operators and users.
To take the MNP service, users are paying Tk 157.50 for a new SIM card and service charge. Of the total cost, MNP charge is Tk 50, VAT Tk 7.50 and New SIM Tk 100.
Customers will have to wait at least 90 days to make another switch, if the service is started within 72 hours of application.
ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar on Thursday (Oct 18) told Banglanews that a proposal was sent to Finance Ministry for waiver of the Tk 100 (for new SIM). A formal announcement is due in this matter.
ICT state minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak will also be present as chief guest at the inaugural program to be presided by ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar.
BTRC chairman MD Jahurul Haque and Post, Telecommunication and ICT secretary Shyam Sundar Sikder will deliver the welcome speech.
MNP service or in other words it means customers can now switch to any operator without changing their existing 11-digit mobile phone number was launched from October 1.
