The Cabinet has given final approval to the draft of Representation of the People Order (RPO, Amendment) Act 2018 and cleared the way for using electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the upcoming 11th general election.
The approval came from a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in PMO on Monday (October 29).
After the meeting, cabinet division secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam briefed reporters on the matter.
He said scope for using EVM in JS polls was kept in the amended law. However, the scale and power of EVM usage is vested upon the election commission (EC). EC was given full control over the matter.
The amendments to the RPO Act will be given legality through an ordinance issued by the President as it can not be passed in the ongoing and last parliament session,” he added.
According to the Article 93 of the constitution, the President may promulgate the ordinance when parliament is not in session.
