Professor Syed Akhter Hossain has joined the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) on January 1, 2021, as the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Professor Hossain obtained his BSc and MSc degrees in Applied Physics and Electronics with a gold medal and distinction, and his PhD degree in Computer Science and Engineering with postdoctoral research in automation and artificial intelligence.

With more than 30 years of experience working in the industry, education sector, and in research and training, Professor Hossain has been actively involved in research supervision/ research projects/ research collaborations with Institutes/ Industries and has over 250 publications/presentations to his credit. His work is listed in ACM, DBLP, IEEE Explore, and other research databases. 

As an Erasmus Mundus postdoctoral fellow, Professor Hossain contributed to the field of Informatics and Industrial Engineering at University Lumiere Lyon 2 in France and has led several Erasmus Mundus projects supported by Smart Link. He hosted many national and ACM ICPC regional programming contests as contest director and has received several national and international awards for his outstanding contribution to ICT education and for his innovative projects for the visually impaired.

Professor Hossain also received other international awards for his research, particularly for his contribution to the machine translator for Bangla Braille for the visually impaired. He received the National Professor of ICT award in 2016 from Digital World and was presented with the Best Researcher Award in 2019 by Daffodil International University where he served as Head of CSE for ten years. His current research interests include Machine Learning and AI with Natural Language Processing.

Professor Hossain works closely with the ICT Division of the Ministry of Post, Telecommunication and IT of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, and is an Honorary Professor of Amity University, India.
