The government has cut wholesale internet bandwidth price by up to 15 percent to discourage imports and boost its usage across the country.

According to Mashiur Rahman, Managing Director of Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Ltd (BSCCL), the price cut will initially benefit mostly international gateway operators and internet service providers.

“End users will get the reduction price after some time,” Mr Mashiur added.

BSCCL has fixed Tk 310 for per megabit per second (Mbps) of bandwidth in its first submarine cable landing station in Cox's Bazar. However, the price will be less than Tk 300 in Dhaka and Chittagong, Rahman added.

Bangladesh currently imports 200 Mbps from India through International Terrestrial Cable (ITC) links while BSCCL provides 352 Mbps of bandwidth to meet the country’s requirement.
