On 28th March 2018, Access to Information (a2i) Programme of the Prime Minister’s Office organized an international workshop on 2nd coalition forum for affordable internet for all in Bangladesh at Karabi Hall at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka. Bangladesh has become the latest country to join the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI), the world’s broadest technology sector coalition dedicated to reducing the cost of internet access. Providing quick, easy, and affordable internet services at citizens’ doorsteps has been one of the major priorities of the world’s broadest technology sector coalition “Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI).” Numerous national and international organizations have gathered together for the second time for the day long workshop- “Bangladesh National Multi-Stakeholder Coalition.”Honorable Minister for Ministry of Posts, Telecommunication and Information Technology, Mustafa Jabbar was present as the chief guest at the workshop. Anir Chowdhury, Policy Advisor to a2i Programme, Ms. Sonia George, Executive Director, A4AI, and B. Shadrach, Asia Coordinator, A4AI were also present at the day long workshop as special guests. The workshop was moderated by Mohammad Arfe Elahi, IT Manager, a2i Programme.
In his statement, Mostafa Jabbar said, “Government is working towards vision 2021, Digital Bangladesh, and is likely to attain it by 2021 (50th Independence Day). To achieve Government's Vision 2021, it is essential to make internet affordable and accessible to everyone. Our Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has emphasized on establishing internet connectivity across the country and at the same time given equal importance to affordable, accessible, and safe internet.
Access to Information and A4AI has been working closely to provide affordable internet throughout the country. In this regard, A4AI and Access to Information has advanced the policy needed to unlock access to open and affordable internet for all Bangladeshi citizens’. For a very long time, a2i has been collaborating with relevant stakeholders and providing services at citizens’ doorsteps utilizing affordable and accessible internet.
