Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed the authorities concerned to transform all the rail tracks of the country into broad-gauge from existing meter-gauge in phases.
She came up with the directive at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) at the NEC Conference Room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Tuesday (Jan 29).
A project of collecting 70 meter-gauge (MG) Diesel Electric Locomotives (LE) was approved at the meeting. Cost of the project was estimated at Tk 2,659 crores.
As the meeting ended, Planning Minister MA Mannan disclosed the directives issued by ECNEC Chairperson Sheikh Hasina.
“Transformation has to be made into broad-gauge to enhance the capability of railway. We are buying small parts of rail from abroad; these have to be made here in future,” said the premier as quoted by the minister.
She also directed authorities concerned to prepare necessary manpower and infrastructure to manufacture rail parts.
Prime Minister also underscored the need for strengthening the BTCL by increasing the speed of Internet.
