A show-cause letter has been given to the e-commerce company Evaly for resuming business without settling more than 6,500 ongoing consumer rights cases. In the letter, seven days have been set to find out how they started the campaign without settling the case.

Director General of National Consumers’ Rights Protection AHM Safikuzzaman confirmed the matter of sending the letter on Wednesday (January 3).

Director General of National Consumers’ Rights Protection said about the letter, Evaly’s chief executive officer (CEO) Md. Russell has not been able to take effective measures to settle consumer rights cases as he has been in jail for so long. But now that he has been released from jail, there is pressure from consumers on consumer rights to settle the cases. Consumer rights have to act in the interest of the consumers. So, a show-cause notice has been sent in this regard.

On September 16, 2021, RAB arrested Evely’s managing director Russell and his wife Shamima Nasreen, the company’s chairman, in a case file by a customer. Shamima Nasreen was released on bail on April 6 last year. Then on the afternoon of December 18, Evaly’s founder Md. Russell came out on bail from Kashimpur prison.

Evaly founder posted a poster titled ‘Big Bang’ on his wall on social media Facebook on December 23, a few days after his release. On December 29, Russell said on Facebook Live about the Big Bang offer, ‘If Evaly is allowed to do business, all the customers’ debts will be paid within a few days. I say this with confidence. I will give all the answers on how that is possible.’

Then on Saturday (December 30) in a statement sent to the media, the Bangladesh Mobile Phone Consumers’ Association called upon the Directorate of Consumers’ Rights Protection and the Competition Commission to keep an eye on Evaly’s new activities. Only then this letter was given.
