Secretary of Election Commission (EC) Helal Uddin Ahmed on Sunday (December 2) said the authorities concerned began monitoring the social media round the clock to check the spread of propaganda and rumors for the sake of a free, fair and neutral election.
Alongside different government agencies, the commission will also start monitoring the social media from Monday (December 3) by its own team of ICT experts, he added.
Helal Uddin Ahmed also said legal action against those responsible for spreading propaganda and rumors on social media would be taken.
As social media is the easiest way of communicating with voters, the initiative would prevent it from being misused by spreading fake information resulting in confusion among voters, he said.
Helal Uddin also said, "We have taken the decision so that nobody can publish any false news about the election nationally and internationally. If someone does we will take action.”
Officials from the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and other law enforcement agencies were present at the meeting.
