Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor on Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, has urged the global community to cease the use of fossil fuels to protect the planet for future generations. She emphasized the crucial role of Bangladesh’s youth in climate action, noting their innovative energy and enthusiasm as vital for addressing climate change challenges. Platforms like the Commonwealth, she added, can further empower young people to take effective measures towards a sustainable future.
She made these remarks on Tuesday evening while speaking as the chief guest at a reception titled “Youth and Climate Change in the Commonwealth” held at the Westin Hotel in Gulshan. The event was jointly organized by the Australian High Commission and Commonwealth missions based in Bangladesh.
The Advisor further highlighted Bangladesh’s demand for climate justice, noting that although the country contributes minimally to climate change, it suffers greatly from its adverse impacts. While financial assistance has been expected from developed nations, adequate support has not been forthcoming. She also questioned how much financial aid would be necessary to protect coastal districts and small island states.
Acting Australian High Commissioner Nardia Simpson also spoke at the event, reaffirming Australia’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh through youth programs and capacity-building initiatives. Maldivian High Commissioner Shirunine Rasheed also delivered remarks during the occasion.
The event was attended by diplomats, climate activists, youth representatives, and government officials. Discussions focused on how Commonwealth nations can enhance cooperation in climate initiatives led by young leaders.
