Apple has recently lost four members of its artificial intelligence research team to rival technology companies, underscoring the intensifying battle for AI talent among major players in the sector.

According to a report by Bloomberg, Jian Zhang, a lead AI researcher focused on robotics, has joined Meta’s Robotics Studio.

Three other members of Apple’s foundational models team — John Peebles, Nan Du and Zhao Meng — have also departed. Peebles and Du have moved to OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, while Zhao has joined Anthropic, Apple Insider reported.

The departures follow Meta’s earlier recruitment of Ruoming Pang, Apple’s former head of foundational models, in a high-profile hire earlier this year.

Analysts say the exits highlight the competitive nature of the AI industry, where expertise in machine learning and automation is in high demand.

Such movements, while drawing attention, are not unusual as tech giants race to recruit top talent to gain an edge in AI development.

Apple has not publicly commented on the recent departures. The company continues to invest heavily in AI, including the ongoing development of its Apple Intelligence platform, and is still hiring in the field.

Industry observers note that talent migration between rivals is a regular feature of the fast-evolving AI landscape.
