Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing has announced that it has surpassed the milestone of supplying 20 billion image sensors for smartphone cameras. The company began its journey in the 1980s with transistor production. According to GSM Arena, Yoshihiro Yamaguchi, president of Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing, told Nikkei Asia that the growing demand for mobile devices was a major factor behind this significant achievement. The supply of image sensors grew from 10 billion to 20 billion between 2019 and 2024, within just five years.

Sony attributes this rapid growth to the increasing number of cameras in smartphones. Dual-camera phones appeared in 2016 and 2017, and today, four-camera phones have become common, further accelerating the growth of image sensor demand.

President Yamaguchi stated that Sony operates three factories in Japan, located in Kumamoto, Nagasaki, and Oita. The factories in Nagasaki and Oita focus primarily on producing image sensors for mobile devices.

However, Sony is not only focusing on mobile devices but also aims to supply sensors for in-vehicle devices, smart factories, smart ICT cameras, laser devices, and data centers.
