Approximately ten Italian government websites, including those of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Milan’s two major airports, were targeted in a cyberattack on Saturday. According to Italy’s cybersecurity agency, the attack rendered the websites temporarily inaccessible. The report was first covered by Reuters.
The pro-Russian hacker group Noname057(16) claimed responsibility for the attack. On their Telegram channel, the group stated, “A proper cyber response has been given to Italy’s anti-Russian stance.”
A spokesperson for Italy’s cybersecurity agency explained that the attack was likely part of a “Distributed Denial of Service” (DDoS) operation. In such attacks, hackers overwhelm a network with excessive data traffic, causing systems to malfunction. The agency acted promptly to mitigate the impact, resolving the situation within two hours.
A spokesperson for SEA, the operator of Milan’s Linate and Malpensa airports, confirmed that flight operations were not affected. While the airport websites were temporarily down, their mobile applications continued to function properly, ensuring uninterrupted services. Source: Reuters
