Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced a $3 billion investment aimed at enhancing Azure cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities in India. The announcement was made on Tuesday, January 7, at a conference in Bengaluru. According to Reuters, this is Microsoft’s largest investment in India to date.
The two-year investment plan is not limited to expanding AI technology but will also be used to upskill Indian citizens in AI. This funding comes in addition to Microsoft’s recently unveiled $80 billion global AI data center project.
India has emerged as a critical market for U.S. tech giants. Recently, CEOs of Nvidia, Jensen Huang, and AMD, Lisa Su, have also visited India, committing to significant investments.
Microsoft currently employs over 20,000 people across 10 Indian cities. Highlighting the contributions of the Indian tech community, Nadella stated, “The collaboration with India’s tech community has been instrumental to our AI projects, especially tools like GitHub Copilot.”
He further mentioned that India’s developer community on GitHub is now the second-largest in the world and is projected to surpass the United States by 2028.
Microsoft plans to train 10 million Indians in AI by 2030. Last year, the company successfully trained 2.4 million people. This initiative aims to ensure a skilled workforce capable of leveraging AI technologies in various industries. Source: Reuters
