On the occasion of International Women's Day 2025, the Bangladesh Science Popularization Society (SPSB) and Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN) jointly organized a special discussion program titled "Accelerate Action: Envisioning Women as the STEM of Science." The event brought together accomplished women from various fields to discuss the contributions, challenges, and prospects of women in science and technology.
The distinguished panel included Dr. Alifa Binte Haque, Associate Professor of Zoology at the University of Dhaka; Shayla Rahman, Director and Head of Service Delivery & Experience at Grameenphone Limited; and Chhanda Mahbub, writer and development activist. They shared their insights on the advancement of women in STEM, leadership opportunities, and the necessity of fostering an inclusive environment.
The panelists emphasized that while women's participation in science and technology is increasing, significant challenges remain. Social perceptions, limited career opportunities, and various obstacles in professional growth often hinder progress. They stressed the need for institutional reforms, family support, and workplace policies that create a more inclusive and cooperative environment.
This online discussion was premiered on Facebook and YouTube to commemorate Women's Day. The organizers stated that similar initiatives would be undertaken in the future to further encourage women's participation in science and technology.
