Google has launched two significant new security features for Android smartphones designed to combat rising fraud and theft. The announcement follows the company’s recent annual developer conference, Google I/O 2024.
In a blog post, Google stated, “Android is constantly evolving to help keep you safe from the unexpected, from scams and lost belongings to the most sophisticated security threats.”
The new security enhancements address areas including call and message protection, screen sharing, device access, and permission management.
Alerts for Fraud Attempts
One of the key features focuses on real-time monitoring of calls and messages. Google highlights that as criminals become more sophisticated, Android’s security measures must evolve accordingly. If the conversation pattern appears fraudulent – for example, if someone requests personal information, urgently demands money, or impersonates someone well-asking for money immediately or trying to impersonate someone – Android will immediately alert the user. The objective is to halt malicious activity before significant harm occurs.
Instant Lock if Theft Detected
Google also clearly states that smartphone theft is on the rise, leading to the introduction of new anti-theft capabilities. A significant feature involves Android’s ability to detect if a device is forcibly taken from a user and is quickly moving away. In such a scenario, the phone will automatically lock itself instantly, preventing thieves from accessing it immediately. Furthermore, Google has updated its remote device management tools, making it easier for users to locate their phone, lock it, or erase data remotely.
Google recommends users consider enabling “Advanced Protection” mode in their settings if they feel it necessary for added security. These new features are scheduled to roll out gradually to Android phones starting from the end of this year.
