Microsoft has announced another round of employee layoffs as part of ongoing efforts to reduce costs. The US technology giant intends to cut approximately 6,000 jobs, representing about 3% of its total workforce, according to a report by Reuters.
In an announcement made on Tuesday, Microsoft cited ‘continuous organizational changes for institutional success’ as the reason for the decision.
This latest round follows previous significant job cuts, including 10,000 employees laid off in 2023 and further reductions in January of this year. The nearly 6,000 employees affected by the current cuts will be from all levels and across various offices globally.
According to a Reuters report, Microsoft had a total of 228,000 employees as of June last year.
Microsoft is currently investing heavily in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, including a joint effort with Oracle and SoftBank Group to build an AI data center. This significant investment is reportedly putting pressure on cost control in other areas of the company. Overall, the US software giant is proceeding with caution amidst its strategic shifts.
