Following a government gazette notification banning all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations, authorities have now initiated steps to shut down the party’s online presence.
The government is working to stop the party’s activities on online platforms. As part of this effort, the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) sent a letter to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) on Tuesday, requesting the blocking of the party’s website and social media accounts, including Facebook and YouTube.
Foyez Ahmad Tayyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor for Post, Telecommunications, and Information Technology, confirmed the development. He stated that the NCSA sent the relevant letter to the BTRC on Tuesday. Subsequently, the BTRC will issue instructions to the concerned platforms to close the accounts, in accordance with the government’s decision.
It is noteworthy that on May 12, the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a gazette notification declaring all activities of the Awami League and its various organizations forbidden. This ban includes any form of publication, media appearance, online and social media campaigning, processions, meetings, rallies, conference arrangements, and all other related activities.
The action is reportedly being taken under the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance.
