Meta’s popular messaging service, WhatsApp, has officially launched a dedicated app for the iPad, ending a long wait for users who previously had to rely on the web version for tablet access. The announcement, made by Meta on Tuesday and reported by TechCrunch and other outlets, confirms the app is now available for download on the App Store.
The new iPad app is designed to leverage the tablet’s larger screen and multitasking capabilities. Users can now make video and audio calls with up to 32 participants, share their screens, and utilize both the front and back cameras. A key highlight is its integration with iPadOS features like Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over. This allows users to perform tasks such as sending messages while Browse the web or researching during a group call, a significant improvement over the mobile experience which requires switching between apps.
Furthermore, the WhatsApp for iPad app supports the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, enhancing its usability for productivity. Meta assures users that personal messages, calls, and media will maintain end-to-end encryption, and everything will stay synchronized across their iPhone, Mac, and other linked devices. The app also includes a chat lock feature for added privacy, especially useful for shared iPads.
The launch was subtly teased by WhatsApp’s official X (formerly Twitter) account a day prior to the official announcement. This development comes as Meta is also reportedly working on a dedicated iPad app for its other major platform, Instagram.
The arrival of a native WhatsApp app for iPad addresses a long-standing request from users and is expected to strengthen WhatsApp’s position in the messaging market by offering a more seamless experience on Apple’s popular tablet.
