Elon Musk, the famous head of Tesla, is leaving his position in the Trump administration. A White House official confirmed late Wednesday that Musk’s departure from his government role will begin tonight, reports Reuters.
Musk had been leading a special team called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
His exit seems sudden. He reportedly did not speak directly with President Trump before the decision was made by senior staff. This news comes just a day after Musk criticized a major tax bill supported by President Trump, saying it was too costly.
Musk joined the administration with a promise to save a lot of government money. He was known for his bold and sometimes aggressive style, even once using a chainsaw as a symbol for cutting government waste. His department, DOGE, aimed to cut $2 trillion but has so far reported saving $175 billion, a figure the article says Reuters could not confirm.
During his time, Musk often clashed with government workers and some top officials. He pushed to end work-from-home policies and made efforts that led to cutting about 12% of the federal civilian workforce. However, his methods also faced challenges, including court opposition and some negative effects like increased costs in certain areas.
Musk recently expressed frustration with the slow pace of change in Washington D.C. and hinted he would reduce his government work to focus on his businesses. His 130-day term was also nearing its end.
The Trump administration has said that the work of the DOGE department to restructure and shrink the government will go on. Musk himself stated he believes the “DOGE mission will only strengthen over time.”
