Bangladesh Bank has advised employing continuous monitoring and, if necessary, the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to curb online gambling in the country. The directive was issued on May 28th in a letter signed by Director Rafeza Akhter Kanta from the central bank’s Payment Systems Department.

The instruction was sent to the heads of all mobile financial service providers, payment system operators, and payment service providers operating in Bangladesh.

The directive noted that the rise in online gambling-related activities has led to an increase in social degradation and criminal acts. To bring these activities under control, the recommendations include continuous monitoring, the use of AI when needed, taking immediate action if evidence of involvement is found, conducting awareness campaigns, and verifying the geographical location of merchants.

The directive stated, “Whether any merchant or general customer is involved in such related activities must be kept under constant surveillance. In this regard, assistance from artificial intelligence (AI) based technology should be sought if necessary. Considering the involvement, on-site observation activities should be conducted at the merchant’s or customer’s address.”

Additionally, adherence to the ‘Cyber Security Ordinance, 2025’, enacted on May 21st, has been mandated for online gambling cases. Sections 20, 21, and 22 of this new ordinance prohibit all activities related to online gambling.
