Apple is getting ready to show off a big new look for its Mac computers, and it’s likely to be called macOS Lake Tahoe. The name comes from the beautiful Lake Tahoe, a spot between California and Nevada. It hints that Mac users can expect a fresh and cleaner visual style.

This update is said to be the biggest change to Mac software since Big Sur came out in 2020. Apple chose the “Lake Tahoe” name carefully to match how big these changes will be. Apple often names its Mac software after places in California, and many Apple workers reportedly have vacation homes near Lake Tahoe.

But it’s not just about the name. Apple is also changing how it names its software versions. Starting this year, all its operating systems – for Macs, iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, Apple TV, and even its new Vision Pro headset – will reportedly use the same version number: 26. This new style is like how car companies name models by the year they come out, even though this software is expected in late 2025.

macOS Lake Tahoe, also known as version 26, is expected to have a new design that makes it look and feel more like the software on iPhones (iOS 19). Apple likely wants all its devices to feel more similar, so users might see updated buttons and menus that work the same way across their Apple gadgets.

Other handy updates might include an easier way to deal with public Wi-Fi. If you connect your iPhone to a Wi-Fi network that needs a login, that login could automatically carry over to your Mac or iPad.

Apple also plans to improve Stage Manager, a tool that helps you manage many open windows. A new version, possibly called Stage Manager 2.0, is expected with macOS Lake Tahoe. Plus, a feature called Vehicle Motion Cues, which is already on iPhones and iPads to help reduce car sickness, might be coming to Macs.

With macOS Lake Tahoe, Apple wants to make using all its devices together a smoother experience. More official details are expected at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which runs from June 9 to June 13.
