Microsoft has confirmed that the Copilot function is now available to Microsoft 365 Insider members. Users can generate formulas with Copilot and integrate them with existing functions such as IF, SWITCH, LAMBDA, and WRAPROWS.
Copilot also updates formulas automatically when data changes, removing the need for manual corrections. To use the feature, subscribers must be enrolled in the Microsoft 365 Beta Channel. For example, entering a prompt such as “Classify this feedback”, D4:D18 will allow the AI to generate results instantly.
According to Microsoft, Copilot can be used for a variety of tasks, including summarising large datasets into concise and clear information; automatically creating lists and tables with multiple rows and columns; classifying customer feedback, survey results, or technical tickets; and generating ideas for marketing strategies or product features. The company advises users to provide clear and detailed prompts, specifying cell ranges and desired output format, such as lists or tables, to achieve more accurate results. Including examples in the prompt can further improve outcomes.
At present, Copilot does not have direct access to live web data or internal documents. Users must first import the data into the sheet. The function is also subject to usage limits of 100 calls every 10 minutes and 300 calls per hour, though Microsoft has indicated that these restrictions may be eased in the future. The feature is fully optional within sheets, and all data remains private.
For Excel users, Copilot represents a significant advancement, making tasks such as formula creation, data analysis, and table generation faster, simpler, and more effective. For those lacking time or expertise in formula writing, it offers a powerful, time-saving solution.
