Google has rolled out a new AI mode in its search engine, expanding the feature to 180 countries and regions following successful trials in the United Kingdom, India, and the United States.

The company said: “Starting today, we are adding more advanced capabilities to AI mode. Users will be able to complete tasks faster, and receive more specific and personalised information based on their interests. We are bringing this benefit to more people worldwide.”

What is AI mode?

AI mode is a new tab in Google Search that introduces an AI-powered interface. It is particularly useful for comprehensive searches, analysis, or comparisons. Instead of manually comparing or analysing, users receive summarised yet detailed answers directly through AI mode.

New features and benefits

Agentic Experience: Searching for restaurant reservations has become easier, and soon the feature will be extended to local service appointments and event tickets.

Personalised preferences: In the U.S., trial users are already receiving results tailored to their tastes and interests, beginning with food and restaurant recommendations.

Link sharing: AI mode answers can now be shared as links, allowing recipients to continue the search or ask follow-up questions from the same point.

How does AI mode work?

AI mode operates through a technology called “query fan-out,” which runs searches across multiple subtopics and sources simultaneously, before consolidating the information into a single answer. It supports text, voice, and image searches, as well as follow-up questions—similar to Google’s Gemini and AI Overview features.

Languages available

Currently, AI mode is available only in English, but Google has confirmed it will gradually expand to more languages.

Why it matters

Google believes AI mode represents a major shift in the future of search. Beyond users, it holds significance for website owners and marketers, who will need to understand how this new search paradigm affects their sites and businesses.
