Chinese state-backed hackers infiltrated the cybersecurity systems of the U.S. Treasury Department earlier this month, stealing several critical documents. The Treasury Department described the incident as a “significant event,” according to Reuters.

The hackers exploited a digital key from cybersecurity service provider BeyondTrust, using it to gain access to some workstations and documents belonging to the Treasury’s Departmental Offices (DO).

Evidence suggests that this attack is linked to a Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) group.

BeyondTrust stated that it identified the issue in December and implemented corrective measures. Meanwhile, the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI are continuing their investigation.

A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry reiterated that China opposes all forms of cyberattacks. Additionally, the Chinese embassy denied responsibility for the incident, dismissing the U.S. allegations as baseless. ‍Source: Reuters
