Bangladesh and China have taken a significant step towards strengthening collaboration in the semiconductor sector, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Bangladesh Semiconductor Industry Association (BSIA) and the Hubei Semiconductor Industry Association (HSIA).
The agreement was signed in Dhaka on Sunday, with BSIA President M A Jabbar and HSIA Vice-President Professor Wei Liu representing their respective organisations.
Under the MoU, the two associations pledged to cooperate in areas including knowledge and technology exchange, joint research and development, training and certification programmes for skilled human resources, bilateral investment and business partnerships, as well as joint events, trade delegations, and expos.
Speakers at the ceremony expressed optimism that the partnership would accelerate the growth of Bangladesh’s semiconductor ecosystem, enhance global competitiveness, and create new opportunities for innovation and collaboration.
Addressing the event, HSIA Vice-President and Chairman of the Academic Committee at Wuhan University’s School of Integrated Circuits, Professor Wei Liu, highlighted Wuhan’s role as “China’s Optical Valley,” home to hundreds of optical communication and semiconductor companies.
With more than 60 universities and around 1.3 million students, Wuhan has become a strong hub of technology and innovation. He noted that Bangladesh’s large pool of talented human resources offers not only opportunities for technology exchange but also remarkable prospects in engineering training, education, and research collaboration.
He added that HSIA represents around 500 semiconductor companies, some of which could establish joint ventures in Bangladesh to advance technology transfer and capacity-building programmes.
BSIA President M A Jabbar described the MoU as a milestone, saying it would strengthen business relations between Bangladesh and China while opening new avenues for academic exchange and technological advancement. “This agreement will accelerate our progress in the global semiconductor value chain,” he said.
Those present at the signing included members of the BSIA advisory panel and academics such as Professor Dr Rokonuzzaman of North South University, Professor Dr ASMA Hasib of BUET, senior adviser Enayetur Rahman, senior director of BSIA Kamrul Ahsan Dewanji, as well as Alia Shafqat, Ashiqur Rahman Tanim, Shakhawat Hossain, CEO of Tafuri Technologies Ltd, Sirajul Alam Khan, CEO of Siliconova, and Tarek Khan, Chief Technical Officer of Prime Silicon, among others.
The cooperation was described as an important milestone that will help position Bangladesh more competitively within the global semiconductor ecosystem.
