Banglalink has inaugurated Bangladesh’s first solar-powered data centre, marking a milestone in the telecom operator’s push toward sustainable and environmentally friendly technology.

The facility, located in Gazipur, has been equipped with an 80-kilowatt solar power system, making Banglalink the country’s first mobile network operator to run a data centre on renewable energy.

The move is part of its broader ESG strategy aimed at reducing carbon emissions and building sustainable infrastructure.

Huseyin Turker, Banglalink’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, said the initiative sets “a new benchmark for sustainable innovation in Bangladesh.”

The solar system is expected to generate around 0.13 gigawatt-hours of green energy annually, cutting carbon emissions by 60 tonnes a year and saving approximately $12,600 in energy costs.

The installation covers 9,000 square feet of previously unused rooftop space and is projected to pay back its investment quickly.

Turker added that Banglalink plans to expand renewable energy generation by using additional unused spaces. “We believe reducing environmental impact and promoting renewable energy are crucial for building a sustainable future. It is a responsibility we must all share,” he said.

The system was installed following rigorous evaluation and strategic planning to ensure maximum efficiency, aligning with the government’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Master Plan 2030.

The operator said the initiative not only strengthens compliance with regulatory policies but also prepares its infrastructure for future demands.

By introducing solar energy into its operations, Banglalink aims to reduce its overall environmental footprint while enhancing resilience and capacity in its digital infrastructure.

The company also hopes its model will encourage wider adoption of green technology across Bangladesh’s corporate sector.
