The government has decided to lower internet prices within the next two to three months. Discussions about this are happening now. Customers are expected to benefit from this price drop within one or two months.
Asif Mahmud Shajib Bhuiyan, an advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, shared this information yesterday, Saturday, at a discussion event. The event was held at the BTRC building in Agargaon, Dhaka, to mark World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
Advisor Asif Mahmud said, “A decision has been made to reduce the price by 20 percent at the internet service provider (ISP) level.” He added that the cooperation of involved parties is needed. He also mentioned that prices have been lowered at the EIG and NTTN levels. “Customers will get the benefit of this within the next one or two months,” he stated.
The advisor also spoke about the internet being shut down during the July uprising, which he said happened at the same time as killings. He mentioned, “We couldn’t even know what was happening then. We found out later after the internet came back.”
Asif Mahmud expressed hope that the Ministry of Information Technology will work to create a safer online space, especially for women’s protection, through the Cyber Security Ordinance. He said, “We must ensure the safe use of information technology and the internet. We have failed to provide security for women in cyberspace. We are not afraid to admit that. Once the Cyber Security Ordinance law is passed, cyberspace will be more secure for women.”
Many other officials attended the event, including Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Advisor in charge of the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology; Mahbuba Farzana, Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting; Shish Haider Chowdhury, ICT Secretary; and Zahirul Islam, Posts and Telecommunications Secretary. BTRC Chairman Major General (retd.) Muhammad Emdad-Ul-Bari gave the welcome speech.
The theme for this year’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day was “Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development.” To observe the day, various events were organized, such as meetings, seminars, a fair at the BTRC area, releasing postage stamps, and a hack-a-thon.
