Daffodil International University (DIU) has hosted Bangladesh’s first two-day mega student research seminar on “Artificial Intelligence in English Language Education,” marking a significant milestone in student-led academic research.

The event explored both the potential benefits and necessary cautions of integrating AI tools into language education.

The seminar brought together perspectives from the Global South and the wider international academic community. Dr Monjurul Abedin, Associate Professor of Education at the University of West London, and Dr Bijoy Lal Basu, Professor of English at the University of Dhaka, discussed the growing reliance on AI tools.

They raised critical concerns about plagiarism, authorship, and ethical use, while emphasising the importance of recognising AI’s presence in education and establishing clear institutional policies for its responsible integration.

Associate Professor Dr Obaid Hamid of the University of Queensland, Australia, delivered a thought-provoking keynote, urging participants to be “radically imaginative” in harnessing AI for educational progress.

He contrasted this with the risk of becoming “obediently imaginative” under the pressures of techno-capitalism.

Over the two days, final-year English students presented 31 original research papers across six broad themes, guided by Assistant Professor Rabeya Binte Habib. On the first day, DIU judges reviewed all submissions, and on the second, 11 outstanding works were presented before a panel of external and DIU reviewers.

Research themes included:

AI in speaking, listening, and communication in English

AI in writing skills and academic literacy

AI in teaching and learning in classrooms

Psychological and cognitive dimensions of AI use

Prompt engineering and AI-enhanced learning

Ethics, plagiarism, and responsible AI use

The seminar concluded with recognition of the top three student research projects. The first prize went to a study titled “The Impact of ChatGPT-Based Prompt Engineering on Assignment Writing Skills of Social Science Faculty Students.”

The groundbreaking seminar not only showcased student research excellence but also marked a historic milestone in DIU’s mission to foster innovative, ethical, and impactful scholarship.

By engaging students with AI-driven learning, DIU aims to equip its graduates with the knowledge and skills essential for success in an evolving academic and professional landscape.

Students experimented with leading AI tools such as ChatGPT, Quillbot, Grammarly, Google Assistant, and Duolingo, with several studies focusing on the potential of prompt engineering to advance English language education and academic development.
