The government Bangladesh is going to award highest civilian honor ‘Swadinota Purashkar’ (Freedom Award) to 10 people, including the inventor of jute polythene bag, Mubarak Ahmad Khan, for their contributions in various fields. The Freedom Award-nominated scientist in 2009 invented corrugated sheets out of jute, known as Jutin.

He uses a mixture of polymers with jute to make jutin. In 2016, he developed non-harmful chitosan as an alternative to formalin, which is harmful to the human body. Recently he has created an eco-friendly golden bag from jute. He also invented numerous everyday items with jute.

According to Scopus, a scientific research database, Mubarak Khan is considered a leading scientist in jute research globally. He is currently serving as Chief Scientific Advisor to Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC). Among his various inventions, golden bags invented from jute, jutin made of jute, helmets and tiles made of jute are notable.

The list of nominees for the 2024 Freedom Awards has been released in a Cabinet Department circular on Friday, March 15.

Apart from scientist Mubarak, this year Kazi Abdus Sattar, a valiant freedom fighter Flight Sergeant Md. Fazlul Haque (posthumous) and brave freedom fighter Shaheed Abu Naeem Md. Najibuddin Khan (Khurram) (posthumous) are receiving Freedom Award for their contribution to freedom and liberation war

Dr. Harishankar Das in medicine, lyricist, writer, film storyteller Mohammad Rafiquzzaman in culture and Feroza Khatun in sports have been nominated for this highest award of the state.

In addition, Freedom Award will be given to Aranya Chiran, a heroic freedom fighter, Dr. Mullah Obaidullah Baki and SM Abraham Lincoln for their contributed to social service/public service.

Each of the freedom awardees receive a medal weighing 50 grams of 18 carat gold, taka three lakh and a certificate of appreciation.
